Altoona Area Historical Society Vice President, and Founder/Co-Chair of Altoona 150 Alex Payne has spent more than a year working on a new book on the history of Altoona, just in time for the Altoona 150 celebration.
It is the second book in recent years on the city’s history put together by Payne.
What makes this book different than the previous book is that it is hardcover, full-color and goes up to 2018 and previews the future.
The original book only went up to the year 1980 so much of the growth of the city in the last few decades was not touched upon.
There will be a special historical society member-only event for the release of the book on July 25.
Payne worked with former mayor Tim Burget and others at the historical society to get the stories together. There will be a collection of more than 200 color photographs, some never seen before, including photos of the great train wreck in 1877 that involved the Barnum Circus Train.
Books will be available beginning July 25. They are $35 each or $30 for members of the Altoona Area Historical Society.
Proceeds from sale of the book will go to the historical society to help preserve the community’s history.
